3 Reasons why a Green Wall or Roof is criticaladmin
“… if we did not replace back any form of greenery and ecology, whatever we once had, would be gone.”
For a country nicknamed the green city, Singapore doesn’t seem to have much greenery in the majority of its architecture landscape. For building owners, green walls/roofs are not only a great way to push an environmental agenda that is in agreement with our green city nickname but also a great return on investment for the building. Today we will discuss 3 reasons why green walls/roofs are great investments for your building!
Alleviating The Urban Heat Island Effect
The Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE) is caused by the absorption and retention of solar heat in the building which naturally causes the temperature to be higher in urbanised cities. Especially in a city like Singapore where the only way to escape the heat is to turn on air-conditioning, this has likely greatly affected the load on your air-conditioning system and building energy usage.
By implementing green walls/roofs that help absorb solar heat to lessen the transfer of heat to your building, you not only save on energy bills but also lengthen the longevity of your building structures. As a sunny city, Singapore’s buildings are constantly under the sun which emits UV light. UV light is known to slowly disintegrate the integrity of building structures overtime and aided by the constant heating of roof and wall materials which result in over expansion and cracking on surface materials, it puts in question the costs and longevity of maintaining your building.
Natural Air Filters
Fun fact, we know that plants can help filter the air in our atmosphere but did you know that it is not the leaves that do the filtering but the roots and biome in the soil? Green walls can not only be installed outside your buildings but also be placed inside your building as well. With our green module system, there is no maximum or minimum to the height of your green wall indoors!
The Right Way to Return Back
I remember that moment when I entered the project site; i stopped in my tracks, it started to dawn on me that the previous “secondary forest” disappeared. It was there at the start as I went to pitch for the project, when the site office was nestled within the shady big 10 meters trees. However, as we successfully got the project, and piling works started, I realized every single tree in that 4-hectare land disappeared. Like totally barren. It then really dawned on me how building of cities really would damage our environment and ecosystem, if we did not replace back any form of greenery and ecology whatever we once had, would be gone.
When you think of the new terminal, what is one thing that comes to your mind? It is likely that the first impression you would get is the attractiveness of all the greenery surrounding you all around and within the terminal. As green walls/roofs are still not yet common for most of Singapore’s buildings, having green walls or roofs not only creates the right type of aesthetics that can attract foot traffic but also generate free publicity with the amount of people posting on social media. Just like the project GWS had implemented for Changi Airport, installation of green walls or roofs in your building would only serve to attract more business and create a pleasant environment for your tenants.
While green walls/roofs projects may seem daunting to take on, we are certain that with our modular systems and experienced professionals, we can help design and implement the right kind of green system for your buildings.
