GaiaMat featured at BEX Asia Exhibition
The GWS GaiaMat was featured at BEX Asia Exhibition held at Marina Bay Sands from 5th-7th September.
We are honoured to partner with SGBC & Surbana Jurong this year, bringing a piece of living green into the exhibition hall. The SGBC Booth won the Best Booth Design Award & Green Space Award this year and here’s a snippet of the behind the scenes.
GWS Gaiamat on 40 degree platform.
GWS Gaiamat green roof was lay-ed almost vertically down, creating a roof for the exhibition
booth on both sides. The height of the sloped pitched roof meant that it could be seen from half
the exhibition hall but also meant that it required pre-grow and a soil-less system.
Why GWS Living Art?
Pre-grow allows the the firm rooting of plants into our medium and conditioning the plants to the
environment. Our nursery in Singapore and Malaysia allows us over 10 acres of space to
pre-grow for exhibitions, commercial and government projects. We are able to provide
consistent pre-grow standards and have even expanded our palette of plants – this means you
are able to design your green roof with slight variations in plant types and colours as well.
Secondly, a soil-less system prevents the issue of dirt and weight – 2 important factors in a
structural design. Without soil, our green roof was installed a day before the exhibition and
maintained throughout the week long air conditioned exhibition hall. The elevation was steeper
than 45 degrees and any soil system would require a much more elaborate design and labour to
carry the soil up. The risk of the debris falling would also have to be catered for. Without soil, the
system was installed overnight and brought in in light-weight rolls.
The display was truly a sight to behold and as the pre-grown was done months earlier, the
glimpse of plants creeping down added to the natural effect of the booth.

SJ invited GWS Living Art to work with their installation that merge different aspects of green
living into a single booth. The colourful booth could not be missed and there was a live sized
card board ping pong table as well. The booth aims to bring awareness of sustainable urban
spaces and GWS Living Art green wall system was displayed prominently.
A small strip of green roof on the model bus stop was also done – a reminder of the real life
green roof bus stop shelter we have done both in Singapore and Malaysia.
In fact, it is the first green roof bus shelter done in KL and in Singapore – the first
without an irrigation system, truly going au-natural.
Once again, we thank all the partners who invited us for the exhibition and our team for the work
put in for the 5 days. Stay tuned for our next post on media highlights and catch us at the Arch
Expo 2018 2nd – 4th October at Marina Bay Sands!
