Stress on the environment, Stress on usadmin
According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas currently, and this proportion is expected to increase further to two-thirds of the world’s population. In just a single city, like Singapore, 80% of its population stays in HDB flats, which are our high-rise public housing. Needless to say, these numbers have showed how urbanization is occurring rapidly-much faster than we have ever imagined, with tall concrete jungles being created across cities.
So, what kind of implications can urbanization bring about? The more commonly known ones we have probably heard about are the detrimental environmental impacts that urbanization causes. However, beyond these environmental impacts urbanization brought about, there is one additional impact that is closely related to the well-being of city dwellers. Although not many might be aware, but a lack of greenery in these urban jungles would indirectly create a more stressful environment for city dwellers. Various research has shown that the presence of greenery could help us to cope with stress better. For example, according to the Daily Mirror newspaper, psychologist Dr David Lewis mentioned that looking at greenery will benefit us enormously when trying to relieve stress. City dwellers tend to have a more stressful working environment, and not seeing greenery around them could further worsen their mental well-being.
Singapore is well-known as a clean and green city, due to the efforts by the government since the “Garden City” vision was introduced almost 50 years ago by Singapore’s then Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. This is the reason why we see greenery whenever we travel outdoors in this concrete jungle. Trees line along Orchard Road and expressways, and parks or gardens are readily available for public use, which are pleasant for us to enjoy the greenery and relieve stress in this concrete jungle. With the benefits of greenery, especially with it being able to relieve stress, wouldn’t it be better if we can bring greenery closer to us? Bringing greenery indoors to where we work, live and play would be able to help us better relieve stress. Having greenery in offices, for example, its presence would create a less stressful working environment for all its employees. This is positive for the health of all employees and in general, creates a more cheerful environment for employees as well. The stress level of students in Singapore is a widely discussed topic, and if students are able to study with greenery close enough to them, it would greatly help to ease their stress from studying.

To take your first step to put some green into your indoor space, green walls are a perfect way to consider as it does not take up too much space, and it can also be easily maintained by yourselves. For example, green walls have their own irrigation system, so there is no need to water the plants daily, thus being easily maintainable even with a busy Singaporean lifestyle.
