Jurong Lake Gardens Opening : SGF Vertical Greenery Competition
Earlier this year, GWS Living Art had the privilege of participating in the inaugural Vertical Greenery Competition at SGF Horticultural Show Jurong Lake Gardens. Keeping the design theme ‘Into the next dimension’ in mind, GWS created a stunning green wall display, Song of the Sea.
This gorgeous green wall display draws inspiration from the majestic grandeur of a giant kelp forest and features our GAIAWALL green wall system at its finest. A beam of sunlight penetrates through the GAIAMAT canopy, alighting the ground to a new world below. At its center is a spiraling frond, our lovely GAIAWALL green wall system built on unconventional curved surfaces. The GAIAWALL green wall system is also built upon suspending columns to give the illusion of the grandiose towering kelp forests. Step into the center under the GAIAWALL canopy and immerse yourself in the Song of the Sea.
Rich in biodiversity, kelp forests provides a unique and productive habitat for marine life. To mimic this, we have composed an ecosystem that will provide a biodiversity-friendly habitat on our green walls. Plants have been prudently selected to maximize biodiversity potential, possessing traits that will attract Singapore’s rich diversity of invertebrates and avifauna. Some of our unique plants include the Sphagneticola Trilobata, an exotic plant with bright yellow flowers. It is known to attract the Lampides Boeticus (pea blue) and Acraea Violae (Tawny Coster) butterfly among a myriad of other butterfly species. We hope our green roof and green walls serve to enhance the biodiversity by attracting such magnificent creatures into our urban landscape.
GWS Living Art’s GAIAWALL green wall and GAIAMAT green roof system utilizes state of the art material technology and nursery culture to create a conducive yet compact environment for plants. The GAIAMAT comprises of only an organic pre-vegetated mat and a water retention fleece. This green roof is 3 times lighter than conventional soil-based green roof systems, making it both cheaper and easier to install. The lighter loading also allows the incorporation of a wider variety of plants that would otherwise be too heavy for the roof to bear.
Despite its many intricacies, the green wall system can be easily managed and maintained. The plant palette consists of water-wise plants that can thrive on our automated irrigation system built into the display. The GAIAWALL Green wall system will require only the occasional pruning by our experienced GWS staff to remain healthy and vibrant for a long time to come.
Here at GWS Living Art, our mission is to ensure sustainability and to build a greener landscape in Singapore’s city space through our green roofs and green wall systems. We are grateful for this opportunity to be part of the SGF Horticultural Show at Jurong Lake Gardens and we hope those who visited our green wall display will find solace amidst the alluring Song of the Sea.
