In terms of energy, green roofs are a passive cooling technique that stop solar radiation from reaching the building. In a tropical island like Singapore, we must not underestimate the role that green roofs play in mitigating urban heat island effect. We have conducted studies that prove the energy benefits of green roof by reducing up to 4 degree Celsius in the room below. As older buildings might have poorer insulation, they actually benefit the most from green roofs. The addition of a green roof also supports biodiversity and stormwater management, appreciating the value of an old existing building.
The flash floods in Malaysia is a reminder of global warming and the need for better green infrastructure in our urbanized cities. Our green roofs contains a filter layer that cleans the rainwater so that the run off is cleaner than the water! This reduces tropical diseases and a clean roof area. The water retention fleece we use absorb the water as well and excess forms the run-off. The water absorbed means there is no need to water the green roofs the next few days – rendering it pretty much low maintenance.
Lastly, in terms of financial assistance – GWS Living Art green roof system qualifies for NParks Skyrise Greenery subsidies. The installation cost of a retrofit green roof can be subsidized up to 50% by NParks in an effort to promote greenery. New schemes such as LUSH3.0 also encourage rooftop gardens in new buildings.
